Set Up Your Networking Assistant

Don't just expand the net, strengthen it!

— Weaver simplifies networking by enabling automated email reminders tailored to your network and preferences.

Follow-up Best Practices

For cold emails: We suggest following up 1-2 times before giving up, with 10+ days between each follow-up. This gives your contact time to respond while keeping you top-of-mind.

For strong, established contacts: We suggest checking in once a quarter (~90 days) to strengthen the relationship. Regular, meaningful touchpoints help maintain and deepen professional connections.

Contacts Needing Follow-up

Networking Tips & Tricks

Master the art of networking with these proven strategies and best practices.

  • Take paper notes on every call so you can reference specifics later and send sharper follow-ups.
  • Come prepared with questions, but prioritize follow-ups so the conversation feels natural and you demonstrate active listening.
  • Start light for 1–3 minutes (how they are, how they like their city, etc.).
  • Do not let them take over the entire call—proactively transition into your background early ("I can tell you a bit about myself, then I'd love to hear about you…").
  • Do not send first-touch/outreach emails Friday–Sunday.
  • Do not send emails before 9:00am or after 5:00pm.
  • Schedule-send emails and use slightly "random" timestamps (e.g., 9:02 or 3:24).
  • Only schedule-send when you can respond quickly (don't schedule for times you'll be unavailable).
  • Always attach a typo-free resume, titled clearly (e.g., "Last, First Resume").
  • Put your name in the subject line so they can search and find your thread easily (e.g., "Boston College IB Chat | Connor Carey").
  • Send the calendar invite immediately once a time is agreed.
  • Use Google Calendar (not Apple Calendar).
  • Title format: "Their Name / Your Name Chat."
  • Set Location = their phone number, add them as a guest, and remove the Google Meet link so they don't receive a video link.
  • Send thank-you emails every time, ideally within a few hours (or schedule for next morning if it's a late call).
  • Always end the call by asking for a referral ("Is there anyone else at X you'd recommend I speak with?"), and reinforce that ask in the thank-you email.
  • Maintain momentum with your top 2–3 contacts per firm by sending a brief update every 1–2 months.
  • If you call and they don't pick up, don't keep calling—wait 10–15 minutes and email asking if it's still a good time and offering to reschedule.
  • If you don't get a response to an email, wait 7–10 days and follow up; after two follow-ups, pause for a few weeks and then try again.
  • When someone introduces you by email, reply-all, move the introducer to BCC, and keep the referral in CC.
  • Don't limit yourself to one alumni channel—network outside your school pipeline and even across cities; unexpected conversations can lead to introductions at your top targets.
